Brief: In order to understand visual communication – its role, its scope, its context in the visual arts and world of design, it is necessary to study its history and development. However, referencing dates and understanding their context / place within a broader timeframe can be an arduous and daunting task. A timeline provides a simple tool to succinctly outline the events that have shaped the broad field of visual communication. It highlights significant events, works and people, enabling you to view them as parts of a great continuum. The outcome of this project will therefore provide an “at a glance” sketch of the intersection between visual communication, mass media, popular culture, technology and world events. Graphic design came of age as a discrete commercial art during the 1900’s. It was further adapted by other visual arts and split off into numerous subsets and genres. This timeline extends beyond typography and layout into visual and textual communications of numerous kinds.
